A Green Label for Wood Stoves? Home & Hearth - March 2004 View
Three months on, we have slashed our gas consumption at one of the coldest times of the year. Although it is a bit early to say with certainty, I estimate we will have cut our bill by £200-£250 this year, down from last year's £600. We should recoup the cost of the stove and its installation in under three years.

Controlled burns, not woodstoves, polluting air View
By Canda Harbaugh, The Western News, December 14, 2010 |“We don’t want to tell some little old lady she can’t use her stove,” Commissioner Tony Berget said. “We’re not interested in being smoke Nazis. We want everybody to be able to breathe good, clean air, but we want to work together as a team to accomplish that.” The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners plans to pass an emergency declaration next Wednesday that would exempt sole heat source users from a woodstove ban in the case of a full air-quality alert in the Libby area.
"A single wood burner, operating efficiently, can produce as much particulate pollution per hour as two large diesel trucks, 45 automobiles, 1,000 oil furnaces or 1,800 gas furnaces, he said. Sometimes owners burn unsplit logs, wood treated with creosote, household garbage and even animal carcasses that worsen pollution." Says Jim Thompson, health department Air Program Manager. CSE analyses recently released six-city study on air pollution sources from environment ministry, finds flaws in it View
CSE’s analysis reveals that this study is a victim to bad science and damaging politics. The auto industry and the oil companies have begun to use the results of this study selectively to prove that vehicles are not the problem and diesel vehicles even lesser so. They are blaming cooking gas (LPG) as the biggest polluter in Delhi! This is being done to keep the standards lenient and to protect diesel cars from harsher fiscal measures.

The subject of smoky chimneys is undoubtedly most important and most difficult. In Chapter VI (Broad Irrigation)., Section II., Vol. I., certain rules were laid down for the construction of fireplaces, flues, and chimney-stacks, and a perusal of these will, it is hoped, be of some service in connection with the cure of smoky chimneys, although they do not cover the whole ground. The defects of existing chimneys may be defects of construction (including form, size, and workmanship) or of position (including fireplace, flue, and stack).

EPA regulations limit the amount of particulate matter, measured in grams per hour, that may be emitted by a woodstove; they don't tell the manufacturers which method to use to achieve this level. Incorporating a catalytic converter is only one way to clean up woodstove exhaust, and it is far from the most popular.

Before the Clean Air Act took effect, there were more than 500 wood stove manufacturers around the country. In 1985, almost all of them stopped making stoves rather than adapt to the more stringent regulations. Most of those that remained turned to catalytic combustion as a solution. But the company now called Quadra-Fire chose instead to look at wood burning in an entirely new way.

DR JOHN TODD, UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA: In some parts of Australia it's not too much of a problem, but in the drier areas such as South Australia, inland NSW, around Canberra, even stretching up as far as inland Queensland, these are areas which have been heavily cleared for farming in the past, and so they're really only remnants of the woodlands left, and these are areas which are now being scavenged or really mined for firewood, and this source of firewood is not sustainable.
Where did it all begin? Did it arise out of a deadly London smog that killed 4,000 people in the space of a few days in early December 1952? Could it have sprung in part from the long-standing interest in pulmonary physiology sparked by polio research? Was it Energy Crisis-induced anxiety over the impact of burning increased amounts of high-sulfur coal in a period of high-priced oil? Or a sense among 1970s scientists and policymakers that the science base for American air pollution standards was insufficient?

There are a number of different values used for the energy content of wood fuels. This discussion will attempt to show the relationship between these different values.
The Meaning of Wood Heating: In their own words View
This is part of a doctoral thesis by Wendy Milne of Ontario, Canada, who studied at the University of Guelph rural studies department, in a program dealing with sustainable rural communities. Wendy was developing the idea of energy literacy, which has to do with how average people manage their energy use, how it affects their lives and how much control they have over their energy choices.
It may seem a strange title for a commentary about a form of home heating that is often seen as quaint and dated. But if politics is the process by which we decide how to manage our lives together, then yes, there certainly is a politics of wood heating. Some people heat with wood and like it, and other people think it is a terrible way to heat houses, and there you have the makings of a contest of ideas and therefore politics.
